Description
From 1924 to 1926, Huddersfield Town were at the pinnacle of the English Football League – the very first team to win the League Championship three times in a row. The intervening eighty years have seen Town leapfrog around the divisions, but it was all so different in the 1920s. The club was feted the world over; the team was littered with international players, and the name of manager Herbert Chapman was revered throughout the land.
To mark their success, Huddersfield Town were heavily featured in the cigarette and trade cards of the day. Many were black and white or sepia, but there were also colour items, all of which now command a high price at any fair or auction site.
Roger Pashby presents a selection of his many trade and cigarette cards, and hopes that they will bring to mind something of the proud history of this West Yorkshire club. The vast majority of them concentrate on the ‘good times’ from 1910 to the 1950s, as these are also some of the hardest cards to find.
Now into their second century as a member of the Football League, it is hoped that Town will soon head back to the more lofty perches of the English League pyramid; until then, these images may suffice to recall the successes of a bygone, happier age. They may even encourage you to begin collecting too!
